Lappeenranta Main Library awarded an honorary mention in accessibility

Each year, the City of Lappeenranta Disability Council awards a recipient for promoting accessibility for the city and its residents. In 2025, the award went to the main library Parvi, whose renovation was completed at the end of last year.

In the renovation plans, accessibility was one of the project’s main objectives. The Disability Council and an accessibility working group were also involved in the project planning from the beginning. The library facilities, entrances and services were improved, thus making it easier for library patrons to move about and conduct business at the library.

It was considered particularly advantageous that the accessibility solutions extended to each and every library function – from doors and stairs to service desks, toilet facilities and furniture. Visually-impaired library users are assisted by voice guides and Braille. The colour palette, acoustics and parking arrangements all promote the accessible use of the library.

“Renovation of the main library was a success in terms of accessibility, despite the challenges posed by the old structure as well as honouring the original features. Parvi is a pleasant, comfortable living room for the whole city – all of us.”
