Project news: Porthania renovation

LPR-arkkitehdit, Helsingin Yliopistokiinteistöt and SRV have signed an alliance agreement for the renovation of Porthania. The project will start with a development phase and continue with the implementation phase under a separate decision in the summer of 2026.

Located at Yliopistonkatu 3 in Helsinki, University of Helsinki City Centre Campus building Porthania was completed in 1957. The approximately 21,000 gross square metre building is subject to extensive and demanding conservation objectives, which make it an important site, both in terms of architecture and cultural history.

The preliminary total cost estimate for the project, which will be carried out using the alliance model, is EUR 30 million. The building utilities will be updated and its functionalities will be modified to better serve the current needs of the university. In addition, the accessibility of the building spaces will be improved. The solutions to be implemented will take into account the conservation values of the building and promote the University of Helsinki’s goals for achieving carbon neutrality.

The Porthania renovation project is a natural extension of our long-term cooperation with Helsingin Yliopistokiinteistöt. In recent years, we have participated in projects for the renovation of, for example, National Library of Finland, Siltavuorenpenger 5 and 1-3:n, Aleksandria and Vuorikatu 3.
