The original Hirvensalo Parish Centre was designed by architect Pekka Pitkänen in 1962. Hirvensalo had been wanting a new centre for several years as the old centre was too small and suffered from indoor air problems.

Carefully designed for the old building site, the new building retains the character of the preserved church and remains within the footprint of the old building sections. The exterior walls were sheathed in solid cinder block. A special feature of the updated centre building is the interior brick walls of the old church hall which were left in place. The other parts of the centre are new construction, whose facilities were designed for multi-purpose needs and accessibility was taken into account to meet current standards. The main hall of the building was tripled in size and other areas were adapted to meet the needs of early childhood education, youth and church social work as well as for Scouts activities.

We served as the principal architects and head architectural and interior designer, working in close cooperation with the client, construction supervision, city planning and the Turku Museum Centre.
