In the renovation of the Port of Naantali terminal building, the facility was given a modern look while remaining true to the original architectural design. The primary objective of the project was to bring the existing terminal building up to the standard of a newbuild. At the same time, the building’s functionality, user-friendliness and energy efficiency, among others, was improved by switching from district heating to geothermal heating. The building’s technical infrastructure was also updated to meet modern requirements.
The exterior walls of the terminal and the passenger shelter were replaced and the port area traffic arrangements were clarified. The original contrast between the main exterior façade of glass and metal above and the solid plinth below was enhanced by adding glass and reflectivity. The façade surface segmentation and main colours were preserved.
Indoors, the challenge was to integrate modern technical infrastructure with the old building and room heights. The passenger arrival and departure hall on the first floor were updated. A port control room, break facilities for port staff and a reception lobby for guests arriving at the building were also completed on the first floor. The office facilities on the upper floors were also modernised into bright, flexible multipurpose spaces.
After being in hibernation for nearly 30 years, the port has once again opened for passenger traffic, with the ferry Finnsirius entering into service in September of 2023.
