The Masku Neurological Rehabilitation Centre combines functionality with comfort: the building entirety must function smoothly and ease its users’ lives and work while also serving as a temporary home. These factors drove planning in many phases of construction and expansion of the centre.
The Masku rehabilitation centre is Finland’s only facility specialising in neurological disorders. The centre has lodging for 87 patients and is used by about 1,300 rehabilitation patients annually. The centre has about 100 personnel.
A diverse variety of therapy and exercise areas is available: green therapy area, physical therapy and movement treatment, lymph area, environmental-management-equipment room, wheel-chair-fitting room, gardening therapy area, gym, sauna and pool area. The centre also includes activities-therapy areas. In addition, it houses the offices of Finland’s MS centre. All areas have unhindered access.
The original section of the rehabilitation centre (15,000 m3) was completed in 1988, the first expansion phase (3,500 m3) in 1993, second expansion phase (4,400 m3) in 1996 and third expansion phase in 2003. Changes required by the centre’s operations were made in 2006-2011. The multiphase planning and realisation process can be seen in the building’s finger-like spatial outline.
In 2021, the facility’s care services were expanded to include permanent residences. The 2025 renovation was Neuroliitto’s third Kuntokoti project, in which the rehabilitation rooms in the wing built in 1994 were upgraded into high-quality, practical, and homelike supported living apartments. The number of apartments was increased by ten, bringing the total number of Kuntokoti apartments to 31. The renovation focused particularly on meeting residents’ needs and ensuring everyday life runs smoothly, with all apartments designed to be both accessible and safe.
